Bruno Fernandes – Professor

Professor Bruno Fernandes is a 4th degree black belt under Carlos Gracie Jr. and has studied Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for almost 30 years. He started at the age of 11 in his hometown Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and never stopped. He is a proud member of the Gracie Barra Organization and had the chance to train with the best in the sport on a daily basis. All the great names of Gracie Barra influenced his game, shaping it into a unique style characterized by speed, fast transitions, flexibility and smoothness. He blends traditional moves and newly developed techniques with ease.

Bruno upholds a strong set of moral values and personal discipline. He is committed to maintaining the integrity of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Besides learning jiu-jitsu at the highest level, students also learn the philosophy of the art. Respect to others and sportsmanship are some of the qualities expected from students. The Gracie Barra Family distinguishes itself from other teams not only because of the most refined technique but also because of the emphasis on moral development. Bruno considers his teammates like family and the team itself as nothing less than an immense brotherhood. He believes that jiu-jitsu is much more than a martial art, but a healthy lifestyle to be shared with people you care about.

Bruno has made his name after years of competition and accomplishments. Among other titles, he won 4 world titles, 4 Pan-American championships, plus national and regional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments. It now gives him great joy to see his students thrive. Some have already been in the podium on world championships and submission grappling tournaments. Bruno’s relationship with mixed martial arts been no less outstanding. Based in Montreal, he has helped to improve the ground game of most of the top Canadian MMA fighters such as George St-Pierre, Dave Loiseau, Jonathan Goulet, Rory McDonald, John Makdessi, Alex Garcia, Mike Ricci, just to name a few.

Prof. Bruno Fernandes has a medical degree and residency training in ophthalmology. His desire to do research brought him to Montreal in 2005. Since then, he has earned a PhD degree and studied cancer and various pathologies of the eye at the prestigious McGill University and University of Toronto. He worked as an Assistant Professor at McGill University from 2009 until 2012, and regularly published articles in major journals and gave presentations all over the world. In 2012, Bruno retired from his medical career and is now fully committed to his students at Gracie Barra Montreal.

Rodrigo Mendanha – Head Instructor

Rodrigo was born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The first martial art he practiced was wrestling, a discipline he perfected during the years he lived in Chicago, IL. When he returned to Brazil in 1996, Rodrigo wanted to find a school in order to continue his training in martial arts. He found Gracie Barra BH, founded by Vinicius Magalhães ”Draculino”. Rodrigo already knew about the Gracie family’s story and was happy to have the chance to practice the art with some of the most respected masters in the world.

“I am very proud to say that I went from the white belt to the black belt under Draculino. He is committed to teaching more than the technical aspects of martial arts, but also emphasizes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a lifestyle involving social responsibility, respect and friendship.”

Rodrigo is passionate about health, and his teaching puts the emphasis on the details in techniques, as well as speed and agility. He often shows timed techniques: movements that take advantage of a specific moment to perform an attack or a defense. Rodrigo believes that jiu-jitsu can influence the moral and social development of all, and lead to a more harmonious lifestyle. His classes are demanding both physically and mentally, but are always very enjoyable.

Jean Philippe – Instructor

Jean-Philippe has been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for 3 years under Professor Rodrigo Lima Mendanha, but has been involved in the art for many years prior to joining the Gracie Barra team.

An athlete his whole life, Jean-Philippe suffered a head trauma early in his life, which led him to his passion for jiu-jitsu, a martial art with no strikes that he can practice without worrying about his health.

In his teaching style, Jean-Philippe always places the emphasis on control and positional dominance, making him a great instructor for both self-defence and competition.

Being an instructor in the GB Kids 2 Program, he also deeply believes in the Gracie Barra ‘’anti-bullying’’ program:

‘’Jiu-jitsu can give kids of all ages the tools they need to be confident, adopt a good work ethic to be successful in school, and be able to defend themselves both physically and mentally.’

Vlad Egorov- Instructor

Vlad has been practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for 6 years, 5 of those under Professor Rodrigo Lima Mendanha. Before being drawn into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Vlad has been an athlete his entire life and has a good background in freestyle wrestling.

Going in and out of many sports, Vlad has finally found his passion at Gracie Barra, and feels a solid connection to his team and anyone representing the Red Shield.

Being a smaller 155 pound athlete, Vlad places the emphasis on technique over strength in his teaching style, enforcing the concept of ‘’Jiu-Jitsu for Everyone.’’ He loves helping people from all backgrounds achieve their goals, be it fitness, self-defence, confidence increase, or competition.

‘’No matter who you are, where you are from, what your goals are or what your fitness level is, you will benefit from Jiu-Jitsu both personally and athletically.’’
